Tomorrow evening in California, for one night only, Macy’s presents: Madonna.

Celebrated not only for her lyrical accomplishments but also her unique sartorial style, Madonna’s fashions through the ages will be channelled into an exclusive pop-up exhibit at Macy’s California branch in Century City. The musician has hand-picked just eight of her favourite pieces from her extensive costume archive, from that conical corset by Jean Paul Gaultier worn on the Blonde Ambition tour to the wedding dress she wore to the MTV VMAs in 1984 to perform Like A Virgin.

Arianne Phillips, who has worked creatively with Madonna for years, was chosen to curate and style the one-off installation. She said: “Fashion has never been the same [since Madonna]. Bold and unforgiving, humorous and shocking, we can depend on her to challenge us to rethink fashion. Madonna has taken sacred garments like the wedding dress and religious embellishments and re-contextualised them.” Of the Like a Virgin wedding dress Phillips commented: “That was one of the most shocking, liberating and influential moments in pop culture and fashion history.”

Madonna has taken a more conservative view of fashion in recent years, taking an interest from a business point of view in her and daughter Lourdes’ fashion line, Material Girl. The latest collection from the pair’s brand, specially created for Macy’s, will sit alongside the eight-piece hall of fashion fame. Madonna said of the collaboration: “The pop-up exhibit at Macy’s perfectly exemplifies the inspiration and spirit of the Material Girl line and will give my fans a great opportunity to see the evolution of my style over the years.”

The Madonna’s Fashion Evolution exhibition will be open to customers at the Macy’s Century City store in California on Thursday April 25 from 6pm to 8pm.
