Her bee-tastic catwalk was one of my favourite moments of last season’s Fashion Week, but news has just filtered through that expectant mum Sarah Burton will be missing from the Paris Fashion Week runway schedule. Taking her maternity leave in London, the creative director for Alexander McQueen has instead prepared a small presentation of the fashion house’s Autumn 2013 collection to be presented to 100 editors on 5 March at 4.30pm. Buyer appointments will be scheduled for the following day.
The news comes as New York designers Peter Som and Chris Benz have also chosen to eschew the Manhattan-based catwalks in favour of unveiling their new season collections via alternative formats and taking the time to strategise on business direction for the coming year. Katie Holmes’ label Holmes & Yang will also be absent from the New York Fashion Week schedule, though whether this is due to ongoing acting commitments or the lukewarm reception to her debut collection last season is anybody’s guess.
Meanwhile, Burton who is pregnant with not one but two mini fashionistas, is due to restore the Paris catwalks with a much-needed dose of McQueen theatricality and flare for the SS14 season, filling the house’s usual timeslot of Tuesday at 7.30pm. Riding high following the receipt of her OBE (Order of the British Empire) in December, Burton joins the Duchess of Cambridge – whose royal wedding dress she designed in 2011 – in preparing for a new addition to the family. Asked whether she’d turn her hand to some royal maternity ensembles for Kate, she said: “I hope I will be”, though it looks as though a line of childrenswear may be more likely to be on the cards?
