It’s the last day of 2012 and what do I wake up to this morning but news that Kim Kardashian and her latest beau, Kanye West are expecting. So as news sources reveal plans between the pair to merge their sartorial pursuits and form a joint fashion label, my thoughts of course turn to how the newest member of the Kardashian Klan will fare in the all-important style stakes.
Between Kanye West’s clothing line and Kim Kardashian’s own style ventures with her sisters, including their boutique chain DASH and recent collaboration with British high street brand Dorothy Perkins; their future offspring is destined for a life in the fashion spotlight. But will s/he follow Daddy’s media-eschewing flop or Mummy’s savvy style and couture curves?
Treading the runway boards none too carefully, West’s own entry into the world of high fashion has been rocky at best delivering his debut women’s ready-to-wear collection in September 2011 at Paris Fashion Week, that fell short of every expectation. His follow-up offering at the start of this year revealed a mild improvement, staying true to the rapper’s urban sexy, luxe aesthetic with a lot of black leather and crazy footwear, but the star did not return to the Paris catwalk for the SS13 season. Whether he has decided to bow out gracefully and stick to what he does best, remains to be seen.
Meanwhile, preceded by her impressive cleavage and glossy locks, Kim Kardashian’s rise to fashion fame has run a tad smoother. With DASH stores in Miami, LA and New York, the IT girl’s latest accomplishment has been to extend the Kardashian reach to the British fashionista community, planting the K brand among the rails of Dorothy Perkins. Polka dot, metallic, animal print and all figure-hugging feminine shapes, the DP Kardashian Kollection is everything one would expect of the expectant celeb and her sisters Kourtney and Khloe – who has just completed a presenting gig on the USA’s answer to The X Factor.
One Mini Fashionista who is sure not to be modelling a potential Kardashian/West childrenswear range is the expected royal addition to the Buckingham Palace brood care of Will and Kate. The Duchess of Cambridge snubbed Kardashian’s attempt to style her in the eponymous collection, returning the free garment almost immediately. But what of Kardashian’s own bubba – afforded the fame pedestal by his/her prospective parents it would seem the world is their oyster. But will it be style crash or fashion forward for Kardashian/West Junior?
