Frequently photographed in the style section of many a fashion glossy dressed in Topshop’s finest, actress Kate Bosworth has been unveiled as the high street brand’s face for its first ever Christmas campaign. Following five days of suspenseful tweeting as the fashion retailer kept fans guessing with the elusive hashtag #whosthatgirl trending since last week, they have finally revealed Kate as their festive style ambassador.
Shimmering in bespoke red dress, crafted by Bosworth alongside the Topshop design team, and old Hollywood waves; the look is reminiscent of Michelle Pfeiffer’s piano bar vocalist ‘Susie Diamond’ in the1989 classic The Fabulous Baker Boys. Directed by Bosworth’s fiancé Michael Polish, the mini movie emanates true cinematic power as the star gives a sparkling rendition of Winter Wonderland atop a grand piano before the set is a flurry with a cascade of snow.
Bosworth’s custom-made gown will be available from February 2013 as a special made-to-order purchase at topshop.com to mark the opening of Topshop’s LA store. Phelan, speaking to Vogue.co.uk, explained the brand’s choice in Bosworth, saying: “She is always pictured wearing Topshop and we love how she makes it her own. I feel like she embodies so many of the qualities of our girl – she appeals to everyone because she loves fashion and that’s something we can all relate to regardless of age. Topshop is built on being able to cater for everybody no matter who they are or where they come from.”
Phelan also remarked on the film short’s director, revealing that it was the couple’s chemistry that led to the atmospheric and intimate production of Bosworth’s performance. She said: “I think that we loved that the two came hand in hand. It was never really a question as we evolved the idea together and he had such a clear vision. I don’t think anyone else could get that intimacy out of Kate – they have a special bond and I think that shines through in the film.”
So as Will’s royal Kate announces she’s expecting, Topshop has expectations of its own for its Kate in the form of Christmas number one. As the mini movie is released onto the brand’s website and rolled out across billboards and in stores nationwide, the exclusive track has been made available on iTunes. Topshop creative director, Kate Phelan has high hopes that Kate’s “amazing” vocals will trump any festive competition from X Factor and the like, securing a fashion first for the high street label.
