It was a big night for fashion on the westerly side of London town last night, as famous names including model Jodie Kidd, designers Jasmine Guinness and Bella Freud and radio DJ Edith Bowman attended the opening of British/Chinese designer, Star Hu’s flagship store.
Quite the must-attend event, the soundtrack to Hu’s glamorous evening was provided by Sadie and the Hotheads, fronted by American actress Elizabeth McGovern, she of ‘80s cinema fame, namely starring opposite Kevin Bacon in one of my all-time favourite movies, She’s Having a Baby. The power-dressing trend of that fashion era certainly comes across in Hu’s pieces which take their cue from the sleek hourglass silhouette, capturing the power entrenched within a woman’s sex appeal and femininity.
The Beijing-born designer hails from an international upbringing crossing the globe to dwell in first Tokyo, then Wellington and finally London, where she studied her craft at the ancient and eminent Italian fashion school, Istituto Marangoni. Upon graduation, Hu designed her debut collection to encapsulate an aesthetic of an enduring future elegance. Her tailored pieces with their architectural composition have already won her a credible roster of celebrity clients, including musician Rita Ora, fellow designer Bella Freud and model/actress Camila Rutherford.
The opening of her London flagship store marks an exciting step in the designer’s journey to sartorial acclaim and further success, well placed on the unofficial fashion catwalk that is Portabello Road with its mix of vintage and contemporary styles.
