I came over all Hugh Grant circa Notting Hill today as I stepped into the plush setting of The Berkeley Hotel in Knightsbridge to view the latest must-have accessories by Uunique London and interview star of The OC, Mischa Barton.
Uunique is launching four new collections of phone cases and holders for a selection of smart phones and tablets, including the Millionaire edition, the Elite collection, the Fashion collection and the Mischa Barton collection. Featuring the actress-turned-designer’s floral logo, her collection for the mobile accessories brand serves as an extension to the bohemian, vintage aesthetic of her own clothing line Mischa’s Place, which she established with her mother Nuala.
The acclaimed actress, who has been treading the theatrical boards since that cameo in the 1999 Brit flick and of course her starring role in the American drama series alongside Rachel Bilson, has been making waves in the world of fashion since launching her own accessories line Mischa Barton Bags in July 2008. In partnership with Fitzrovia Designs, Barton has established a label which delivers beautiful quality pieces with each collection bearing some reflection of the actress’ personal style.
Commenting on her collaboration with Uunique, Barton told me: “Uunique approached me and I thought it would be a fun thing to do. It’s amazing all the new things you can do with phone cases and there aren’t a great deal of cool ones out there so it was great to have the opportunity to come up with some designs,” she said. “I like doing accessories and the thing about the phone covers is that you can change them out to match your outfit.”
Picking up on the brand’s sartorial ethos of crafting a “wardrobe for your phone”, Barton went on to confess that while her career has been paved with stars of the Hollywood variety it is the stars in the sky which have her attention, revealing the Stargazing App on her iPad to be her favourite. “I really love all that educational, sciencey stuff,” she said.
With designs to suit every style and budget, from teen to businessman about town, prices start from £19.99 for the Safari collection and soar to £600 for the exclusive Millionaire edition. Made with 24 carat gold coated Swarovski crystals, only 50 of the Millionaire cases were made, though Mobo award winner and musical star of the moment Emeli Sandé was the lucky recipient of one, so be quick to snap up one of the remaining 49! From floral appliqué and crystal embellishment to smart leather and graphic print; Uunique has crafted a distinct and quirky range of accessories in luxury materials that we have come to treasure and covet as highly as our designer bags and heels.
Tomorrow sees the brand host a glamorous event at the Kensington Roof Gardens to unveil the new designs. The Secret Garden Party will feature a catwalk show to present the new collection, live music and an A list guest list, Barton will be on hand to introduce her collection and deliver exclusive interviews as to its inception.
